BC Skills Competition: April 22, 2009

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, Skills Canada held its provincial qualifier competition at Abbotsford’s Tradex.

More than 5,000 students, instructors and spectators attended the event. go2 participated as an exhibitor at the Pathways to Careers Showcase and our Program Manager, Dennis Green, was one of the judges for the competition.

Competition highlights and winners of each category are as follow:

In the Baking (Secondary) category, students were tested in five key areas, including puff pastry tart, small production of bread making as well as choux paste.

In the Baking (Post Secondary) category, students were tested in three areas, including an 8-inch butter cream occasion cake with inscription that read “Skills Canada".

In the Culinary Arts (Secondary) category, students were asked to prepare a three-course meal, including lacto-ovo vegetarian appetizers, a rack of lamb as a main course and desserts using semi-sweet chocolate.

In the Culinary Arts (Post Secondary) category, students were asked to cook 12 pieces each of 4 different hors d’oeuvre using scallops, duck breast and goat cheese, as well as 2 dessert trios.

The gold medalist of each level and category will represent BC in the upcoming Skills Canada Competition.
