Yes 2 IT Trades Exploration at Camosun College: March 26, 2010

On March 26, 2010, go2 had the opportunity to showcase the Professional Cook and Baker trades to grade 8 students exploring careers in trades. Nine other trades were also featured at the day long interactive event, organized by Camosun College in partnership with South Island Partnerships and the Industry Training Authority.

Over 2,000 students from Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Gulf Islands and Cowichan Valley school districts attended.

In the Professional Cook room, students learned how to decorate canapés using a piping bag. Creativity ruled as students used a variety of garnishes and then ate their creations!

Judith Kirchner and Philippe Renaudat were a big hit with the “name the fruit and vegetable” game, introducing students to a variety of exotic produce, including durian, pomelo, dragon fruit and taro root, and their uses in cooking.

In the Baker room, students learned firsthand about making dough by learning how to distinguish the differences between varieties of flours and getting hands-on experience kneading pizza dough, with Terry Lockhart Rust, Executive Sous Chef at the Great Canadian Casino in View Royal.

Watching D’Oyen Christie, Executive Pastry chef from the Fairmont Empress create chocolate roses was almost as much fun as trying the variety of pastries he brought.

Ken Harper from Vancouver Island University’s Professional Baking program highlighted the benefits and opportunities of working as a baker in industry, while Greg Brown, Executive Chef for Amica at Douglas House, encouraged students to consider the world of opportunities in cooking.
