Tour Guide

Tour guides lead visitors, individually or in groups, on tours less than a day in length. Tour guides ensure that itineraries are met and that customers are being informed in an entertaining manner the location they are touring. They are also responsible for ensuring the safety of the group and ensuring that tour groups remain together. Tour guides are employed by tour companies, resorts and attractions.

Responsibilities:

  • Arrange for transportation for visitors
  • Assemble and check required supplies and equipment before departing for tour
  • Describe points of interest along the tour and answer questions as required
  • May be responsible to guide visitors while operating a vehicle, traveling in a vehicle or on-site while providing commentary
  • Monitor visitors' activities in order to ensure compliance with establishment or tour regulations and safety practices
  • May have to either plan and/or conduct itineraries and activities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Secondary school diploma is preferred
  • Tour Guide certification may be an asset
  • Safety training required
  • Extensive knowledge of local history, buildings, artifacts, and amenities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Creative methods of communication
  • Ability to do thorough research
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Good conflict resolution
  • Good customer service skills
  • Knowledge of a second language is an asset

  • Tour Operator
