What is the FOODSAFE Correspondence Program?

Share |

FOODSAFE is British Columbia’s food safety, handling, and sanitation course. The Level 1 program equips foodservice workers with the knowledge and skills to apply proper food handling and preparation techniques and to follow appropriate safety measures to prevent food-borne illness.

The FOODSAFE Level 1 Correspondence course, offered only through go2, is an ideal option for employers wanting to train staff in-house, people in remote areas where classroom courses are not readily accessible, and individuals with busy schedules who want to learn at their own pace.

Who needs to take FOODSAFE by Correspondence?

Since 2002, BC’s Food Premises Regulation has stipulated that operators of a foodservice establishment are legally required to hold a FOODSAFE certificate or equivalent food safety course. When the operator is not present, at least one employee must be FOODSAFE certified.

Cost

1. Course with workbook and DVD $85.00 + $15.00 shipping & handling (Recommended for first time users)
2. Course with workbook only $70.00 + $15.00 shipping & handling (Recommended for organizations with a copy of the DVD or individuals taking the program as a refresher)

Both options include the exam and certificate. Exams in other languages can be made available upon request. Companies registering more than one employee should contact go2 for combined shipping and handling costs.

How long does the Correspondence Course take?

The course must be completed within 6 months of registration. Students may request a 2-month extension subject to a $25.00 fee; otherwise re-registration at full course fee will apply.

What about Course Refunds?

If the course materials are unopened and received back at go2 within 30 days: full refund of course cost, excluding shipping & handling.

If the course materials are opened and received back at go2 within 30 days: 50% refund of course cost, excluding shipping & handling.

  • Ministry of Health Services
  • BC Centre for Disease Control
  • Fraser, Interior, Northern, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island Health Authorities

2. Program Delivery

Once go2 receives your registration form and payment you will be mailed the following:

  • The FOODSAFE manual and DVD
  • Instructions on how to proceed
  • Invigilator Request Form:
    • Students in the Lower Mainland must complete the exam at the local Health Authority under the supervision of a Health Inspector. To contact a Health Inspector in your area please click here.
    • Students outside the Lower Mainland must find an Invigilator to supervise the exam writing. The Invigilator may be public health official, local municipal official, librarian, teacher, or chef (with red seal certification) in your area.

You will also receive instructions on how to complete the program as well as self-quizzes to monitor your progress.

3. The Exam

When you are ready to take the final exam, we will send it your Invigilator. For students inside the lower mainland, the health inspector will provide you with the exam. The final exam is closed book, must be completed in one (1) hour and consists of 55 multiple choice questions.

4. The Results

A passing grade of 70% is required for certification. Once go2 receives your completed final exam it will be marked and the results will be faxed to you and then sent to your local Health Authority. The Health Authority will then issue your certificate. This can take up to 3-4 weeks.
