What is the FOODSAFE Correspondence Program?

FOODSAFE by Correspondence is a self-paced, distance learning version of the FOODSAFE Level 1 classroom course. Overseen by go2, FOODSAFE by Correspondence is the simple alternative for busy people who require a convenient way to study and take the exam on their own time. This program is also suitable for people who are living in remote areas, where classroom courses and online learning aren’t viable options. While taking the correspondence course students have free access to a trained FOODSAFE tutor that will help to answer questions. All this at a cost that is competitive with the classroom version of the course!

What is FOODSAFE?

From the kitchen to the consumer, the safe handling of food is serious business. The costs and consequences of a single outbreak of a food borne illness can cripple a business financially. FOODSAFE makes everyone more aware of the dangers of food poisoning and how foodhandlers can minimize the danger.

Who needs to take FOODSAFE by Correspondence?

In BC, operators of a foodservice establishment are legally required to hold a FOODSAFE certificate or equivalent food safety documentation. When the operator is not present, at least one employee must be FOODSAFE certified.

How much does it cost?

$75.00 registration fee as well as a refundable $50.00 deposit for your DVD or VHS video.

4 Easy Steps to Certification:

1. Registration

Print and fill out the registration form. Mail or fax your payment along with the registration form to go2. Please do not send cash in the mail.

2. Program Delivery

Once go2 receives your registration form and payment you will be mailed the following:

  • The FOODSAFE manual and DVD or VHS video
  • Instructions on how to proceed
  • Tutor information
  • *Invigilator request form (Please note that if you live in the Lower Mainland you must complete your exam at your local Health Authority. However if you live outside the Lower Mainland you must find an invigilator to proctor your exam.)

3. The Program

Instructions are provided on how to complete the program. Also included are self-quizzes so that you are able to monitor your progress. Once you are ready to take the final exam, we will send it to the person that you have identified as your Invigilator or the local Health Authority. The Invigilator may be a public health official, librarian, local municipal officer, teacher, etc in your area, who will supervise while you write the exam. Again, please note that if you live in the Lower Mainland, a Health Inspector from your local Health Authority must invigilate your exam. To contact a Health Inspector in your area please click here. The final exam is closed book, must be completed in 1-hour and consists of 55 multiple choice questions.

4. The Results

A passing grade of 70% is required in order to become certified. When this has been achieved a certificate will be processed by your local Health Authority and mailed to you. This process can take up to 3 – 4 weeks.

How long does it take?

As FOODSAFE by Correspondence is a self-paced program how long it takes depends on you! The learning and exam portion can be completed in as little as one day or as much as six months. Once go2 receives your completed final exam it will be marked and the results will be faxed to you and then sent to your local Health Authority. The Health Authority will then issue your certificate, which can take up to 3-4 weeks.
