Thanks to tourism industry managers, the innovative Mentorship Program launched at Capilano College last fall has been an overwhelming success. Volunteer mentors from Tofino, to Naramata, to Honduras, have been matched with fourth year Tourism degree students to "share what they know, help someone grow."
Students have gained insight into how tourism works at operations such as Intrawest, The Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, Storyeum, The Wickininnish Inn, the City of Vancouver, The Naramata Inn and Spa, Tourism Vancouver, and the Pan Pacific Hotel. As one student noted:
"It is a unique opportunity to develop a professional relationship in a non-threatening space. The pressure is off as the mentorship is not about securing a job with the mentor after the experience (though it would be a nice bonus). It is a great way to learn about a job you are interested in, without having to commit. It is also a fantastic way to gain new perspectives and insights into the skills needed to be a good manager, learning from the mentor’s experiences."
Another stated:
"My mentor has helped open my mind, enabled me to continually ask what my motives are and clearly understand all the possible places I could find myself in the future."
And:
"By networking and sharing resources and experiences, both mentors and mentees are able to benefit greatly from such a relationship."
A comment from Mentor Nancy Brenner:
"I am really enjoying my time with ______. Great program you have put together."
The Cap College Mentorship program lasts for 5 to 6 months at any time during the year and requires the two individuals to meet a minimum of twice per month. Both the mentors and mentees are given support resources to help shape the content of their relationship and to build their mentoring skills.
