Desiring to stay active and involved, mature workers topped the 2007 employment charts. With a national employment growth rate of 2.2%, the employment rate for workers over 55 rose by 7.7% according to a Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey.
It seems that today’s available and dedicated mature workers have no plans to slow down and they remain a coveted labour source for staff-starved employers. The 2007 numbers speak volumes to the need by employers to look closely at this generation to help fill the demand / supply gap.
Statistics Canada’s 2007 employment results mark a trend among Canadian employers to seek out workers 55-plus. At the end of 2007, 2.5 million workers, 15% of all employed persons, were over 55. Mature workers accounted for an astounding 50% of the nation’s employment growth of 370,000 new positions in 2007.
