With an estimated 84,000 new tourism workers needed in the next decade, the demand for employees just keeps growing. As the tourism sector expands, where do you find employees? What resources are available to help you hire new people?
In recent years, governments have created programs that help social assistance recipients find work. These initiatives also equip your business to locate employable men and women. As you hire people who want to work, your business becomes part of the solution — helping more people contribute to the economy while building your business at the same time. A win-win situation for everyone.
Provincial programs
The BC government has designed programs that help job-ready social assistance clients find long-term work. Through private providers, these programs offer a range of placement and support services for clients and employers.
JobWave
JobWave screens and matches social assistance clients with your business’s job openings. Funded by the BC government, JobWave is sponsored by the BC Chamber of Commerce and supported by community agencies throughout the province.
Federal programs
Federally-based programs focus on EI recipients. These initiatives help them find useful work and on-the-job experience. As well, through subsidy programs, you can receive assistance to hire individuals you normally would not hire.
Targeted Wage Subsidies
This key federal program offers funds to businesses that want to hire new employees — but do not have the financial means to do so.
As a tourism operator, you can apply to receive this wage subsidy. For a defined time, it supplements the salary of an EI recipient whom you hire. This opportunity helps you fill a needed job in your business, plus you give an employee valuable work experience, which can lead to a full-time position.
