Labour shortages are coming back soon and we need to get ready by updating the 2003 Tourism HR Action Plan to set the human resource vision, goals and strategies for the next five years for BC’s tourism and hospitality industry. There are 3 ways for you to participate:
- Join a working group (May – October 2011). go2 is establishing four working groups: Career Awareness & Recruitment; Retention; Training & Development; and Research & Labour Market Information. We are looking for six to eight industry representatives to participate in each working group. The time commitment will include four or five 2-3 hour meetings in Vancouver (with travel expenses paid), a few short teleconference calls, and a few hours of independent pre- and post-meeting reading.
The four working groups will have the following responsibilities:
- Review material from go2, including the 2003 Action Plan, and provide feedback and questions;
- Make recommendations on necessary research;
- Identify key human resource issues, challenges, needs, etc.;
- Identify potential solutions, needed support, and what works (best practices) and what does not work;
- Provide recommendations for the updated Action Plan; and,
- Other input as appropriate.
The deadline to join the working groups is April 26. Click here to join a working group. Please indicate which working group you're most interested in joining.
- Participate in industry surveys (commencing May 2011). Help us identify the key workforce development issues (with a focus on recruitment, retention, training and research) faced by our industry. This is an online survey and will take about 15 minutes to complete.
Sign up here to receive the survey link. We will send you a link to the survey when it becomes available.
- Attend regional roundtable meetings (Summer 2011). Share your input on how we should strategically address the identified labour issues. The roundtable sessions will take place across the six regions: Vancouver, Coast & Mountains, Vancouver Island, Thompson Okanagan, Kootenay Rockies, Cariboo Chilcotin, and North & North Coast.

Background Information
In 2003, the Tourism HR Action Plan was published, based on the recommendations of the BC Tourism Human Resources Development Task Force. More than 100 senior representatives of the tourism industry were consulted during the 18-month development period of the Action Plan, which resulted in the establishment of go2 as the agency mandated to implement the labour force initiatives and strategies outlined in the plan.
With the recent and expected ongoing changes in the economy and the labour force, together with the continuing evolution of people management practices and issues, we need to update the 2003 Action Plan. It will include updating research, scanning other jurisdictions and best practices, industry regional consultations, and developing necessary and practical strategies and actions for going forward over the next five years.
