Congratulations to Carla Obando and Jesse Ong of Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver on bringing home national medals from the 17th Skills Canada Competition earlier this month. Carla won Gold in Cooking, Secondary Level, and Jesse won Silver in Baking, Secondary Level. Carla and Jesse were gold medal winners at the provincial qualifier, which earned them a spot in the national competition.

June 9, 2011 — Vancouver students brought multiple awards home this past week at the 17th Annual Skills Canada National Competition in Quebec City.
The competition held June 1-4 attracted talent from all over Canada. Competing students represented the top talent in Canadian schools and over 20,000 spectators participated from across the nation. The competition included over 40 trade and technology contests and in each category three medals were given. This event is the only national, Olympic style multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. The students compete in the areas of trades and technology.
During the event, students are tested against rigourous standards and against peers from across the country. In each category, students vie for the honour of winning a gold medal, acknowledging the best in their category. To win would be every students dream, but simply to compete is an honour.
We are extremely proud of the Vancouver students who participated. Only last month, two students from Templeton Secondary presented at a board meeting and both of these students were successful in winning medals.
We wish to congratulate all the students and their sponsoring teachers in supporting such a demonstration of talent. The Vancouver winners were:
