To highlight the economic impact and social benefits of our industry, Canada is celebrating Tourism Week from June 7 to June 13, 2010. It is an annual, country-wide celebration that aims to increase the profile of Canada’s tourism sector among the media, general public and governments at all levels. Coordinated by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), it provides a focal point for activities organized by provincial and territorial tourism industry associations, provincial and territorial marketing organizations, destination marketing organizations, individual businesses and other partners.
Tourism is a $71.5 billion industry that contributes significantly to the standard of living and quality of life of all Canadians. It keeps 1.75 million Canadians working, which supports economic and community development. In BC, our industry generated $13.8 billion in revenues and directly hired 131,000 people in 2008.
