July 9, 2010, Vancouver – A new report outlining B.C.’s investments in hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and other related investments  provides transparency and accountability and also indicates the Province is on course to realize a wide range of economic and social benefits.

The report follows the release of the 2009-10 Public Accounts and indicates that the Province committed $765 million to staging the Games and an additional $160 million for activities designed to maximize the benefits of being the Host Province for the Games.

B.C.’s investments included venue construction as well as a post-Games operating endowment legacy, Games-time medical and security costs, First Nations and community legacies, funding for the Paralympic Games operations and contributions to fire protection, public safety and a number of other strategic investments.

The wide range of economic and social benefits include sustainable new community recreation legacies from converted Olympic venues, business development and expansion through the 2010 Commerce Centre and hosting programs, First Nations cultural and economic development and expanded tourism opportunities.

The report, British Columbia’s Investments in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and Related Activities, can be downloaded here.
