Safety Sweep: An Employer's Guide to Preventing Injuries to Room Attendants in BC Accommodations

This guide is a health and safety resource that outlines key strategies to prevent workplace injuries to room attendants. It is meant for room attendant managers and supervisors (and anyone else who supervises room attendants) who work in hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and other hospitality facilities that offer overnight accommodations.

Safety Talk Template

Safety Talks are a method to refresh an employee's knowledge and skills, maintain their interest in safety and illustrate the organization's commitment to creating a healthy & safe work environment. Safety Talks can be performed on a weekly basis or before the start of a new scope of work and should be about 15 minutes in duration. Generally, these Safety Talk meetings are led by a supervisor and should be mandatory for all crew members to attend. The content should be centred on a single topic (e.g. a safety rule, safe job procedures, recent incident, JOHSC meeting minutes, inspection results, etc.).

go2 developed these Safety Talks in conjunction with representatives from 10 hotels in BC. The content is meant to be a base on which to work from, so please feel free to customize the subject matter to your own organization.

What is a Risk Assessment?

In this link you will find information on the definitions of a risk assessment and steps to conducting one. It also provides information on how to find hazards and assign a level of risk to those. There is information on how to apply the risk assessment matrix tool to conduct an actual risk assessment. The hierarchy of control methods used to mitigate hazards along with their effectiveness is also detailed along with examples of each.

Risk Assessment Tool for Accommodation  

This tool is an example risk assessment conducted in a large hotel. Examples on how to use a risk assessment matrix is detailed; many common hotel departments and locations are assessed. Several examples of hazards, their associated risk and control methods are used in the matrix to give the user a better understanding of conducting a risk assessment in the accommodation sector.
