On July 2, 2003, along with thousands of others, I sat in BC Place Stadium to hear the results of Vancouver’s bid for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. I will never forget the moment when the announcement was made, and the thunderous roar of jubilation that spontaneously erupted.
I have watched, over the years, as all the pieces were put together. It seemed like the construction of major projects such as the Convention Centre, the Sea-to-Sky Highway and the Richmond Oval would never end. I carefully listened to and engaged in the plans of VANOC, Tourism British Columbia, the Provincial Government and all the other partners and stakeholders. Every year the vision became closer and closer to being reality, with excitement growing as each milestone was reached.
When the Torch crossed the BC border just a few days ago it finally hit me that the dream is now a reality! After this long journey and years of preparation, the 2010 Games are finally here.
Since Christmas, the transformation in the Lower Mainland and Whistler has been magical. Wrapped buildings and vehicles, winterscape murals on the stairways to Robson Square, ziplines over the city, banners & flags from every nation, bright and colourful lights, tents, Olympic rings and more.
Despite all the stylish adornment and beautification of our cities, the real substance of the games lies in the talent of our front-line employees who will greet our international visitors with gold-medal levels of hospitality and service. However, keep in mind that gold-medal performance will only take place if gold-medal coaching and leadership is provided. Now is the time to look after your employees, and they in turn will look after the business. We have compiled some great tips for you to help you create an awesome employee experience during the Games.
As an industry, we have the opportunity to give our valuable employees a final inspirational message. Tourism Vancouver is hosting a rally on February 5 at Robson Square, of which we are a proud sponsor. I hope you and your staff will join us to cheer these employees on and let them know we are behind them every step of the way.
One final thought. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don’t forget to enjoy the moment and allow your staff to do the same. I know I will.
So, oh yes, let’s all Enjoy the Games!
