Job Description

The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is a registered not-for-profit organization, located on the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. This aquarium features more than 3,500 animals and aims to be a catalyst for building a healthy and sustainable Salish Sea Bioregion, through learning and engagement.

The Opportunity
Part-time, 1 – 3 days per week (7.5 – 22.5hr), Sunday and some statutory holidays required. Saturday is potential additional shift.

The primary role of the Assistant Educator is to:
 Provide superior customer service to the Centre’s visitors
 Coordinate and present public programming (ex. presentations, games, hands-on activities) for all ages in a safe and inclusive manner
 Supervise, teach and mentor volunteer educators on biological and environmental sciences, conservation initiatives and programs, and on tools for teaching and engagement
 Provide and maintain a safe and positive work environment
 Conduct community outreach (seasonal)

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Qualifications:
 Experience in customer service (clearly outline any and all customer service or hospitality experience on application)
 Experience with engaging and teaching in formal and informal environments
 An understanding of the biological and/or environmental sciences, either through practical experience or formal education
 Some knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Salish Sea
 Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to communication
 Excellent organizational and time management skills
 Experience with public speaking, public programming and interpretation
 Creativity is a strong asset
