Job Description
The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, located on the traditional territory of the WSÁNEĆ First Nations, along the beautiful Sidney waterfront, is a registered charity and community aquarium with a focus on natural history and cultural learning. Connecting visitors with the Salish Sea bioregion and its ecosystems through engagement, education and awareness, the Centre offers an interactive and informative experience for explorers of all ages from around the corner and across the world. Over 3,500 marine animals in natural habitats, including wolf eels, sea stars, salmon, and a giant Pacific octopus, make up over 160 species offering a unique West Coast learning experience.
The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is owned and operated by the New Marine Centre Society. Our mission is to create experiences that engage people to learn about, explore and conserve the Salish Sea bioregion – its wildlife, waters, land, culture, and people.
Position:
We are looking for one (1) enthusiastic individual to join our Visitor Experience team in a part-time role. In this role, you are a first point of contact for visitors of the Centre, and you provide exceptional customer service at our retail and admissions/memberships desk.
Hours: Part-time shifts are 6.75 to 7.5 hours. Must be available to work Saturdays and Monday starting in September, 2024. Opportunities for additional days/hours if desired.
Note: Working at least one weekend day is required. Applicants must be authorized to work in Canada, be at least 16 years of age and be willing to submit a criminal record check prior to starting employment.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Duties include:
• Providing friendly, welcoming, and helpful customer service.
• Processing customer transactions through admissions and retail tills.
• Processing end of day cash-out.
• Providing detailed information regarding tickets, memberships and merchandise.
• Answering and transferring calls on a multi-line phone system.
• Ensuring the retail space is always clean, tidy and free from clutter.
Qualifications:
• Familiarity with POS systems (e.g., Square) and cash handling – experience balancing a till is an asset.
• Enthusiastic positive personality geared towards exceptional customer service.
• Ability to multi-task in a busy environment while maintaining positive interactions with customers.
• Regularly available to work Monday and Saturday. Additional shifts may be available.
