Employees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Assembly) provide professional non-partisan services to support the democratic institution of Parliament and its members through procedural advice, administrative support and information services. The Assembly is an autonomous employer, separate from the administrative framework of B.C. government ministries and agencies.

The Legislative Dining Room is seeking an efficient, reliable and service-oriented individual for the auxiliary on-call position of Dishwasher.  The Legislative Dining Room is open during the day from Monday to Friday.

Reporting to the Executive Chef, the Dishwasher is responsible for the day-to-day dishwashing and general kitchen help to ensure the Legislative Dining Room runs smoothly.

Primary Functions:

  • Washes china, flatware, glassware, kitchen small wares, and other utensils in the Legislative Assembly Dining Room/Kitchen.
  • Ensures that all work areas, equipment and utensils are maintained and/or stored a clean, tidy, sanitary and secure manner during and at the end of each shift.
  • Assists the chef, cooks, and servers when required.

Job Duties and Tasks:

1.  Washes china, flatware, glassware, kitchen small wares, and other utensils in the Legislative Assembly Dining Room/Kitchen by:

  • operating commercial dish washing machine by activating machine at beginning of shift and ensuring sufficient supplies of dish washing soap, rinsing solution and flatware soaking chemical are available for the day’s shift;

  • requisitioning, and/or replenishing supplies from storage area when required;

  • picking up soiled china, flatware, glassware, and other items from server area and returning items to kitchen for washing using a mobile hand cart;

  • preparing utensils for washing by rinsing and/or sorting all items separately into appropriate washing racks ensuring a minimum amount of breakage;

  • loading commercial dish washing machine and engaging cycle;

  • unloading machine and allowing china, flatware, glassware and other items to air dry and/or towel drying items when required;

  • sorting all stainless steel flatware into storage containers and stacking and/or placing china and glassware and other items into appropriate racks and returning them to the server area;

  • washing kitchen small wares such as food storage containers, baking pans/trays, cooking utensils and other items and distributing and/or replacing to appropriate storage areas.

2.  Ensures that all work areas, equipment, and utensils are maintained in a clean tidy, sanitary and secure manner during and at the end of each shift by:

  • cleaning and/or sanitizing all work area tables and shelving and under shelves when required;

  • sweeping and/or damp mopping floors in kitchen and storage areas when required;

  • shutting down the dishwashing machine, cleaning and/or removing food particles and replacing water when required;

  • cleaning and/or sanitizing mobile food service carts;

  • cleaning and/or polishing stainless steel coffee urns, chafing dishes, food pans and other items when required;

  • opening and/or closing and locking doors, windows and storage areas when required;

  • collecting, preparing, organizing, and storing recyclable items and refuse.

3.  Assists the chef, cooks, and server staff when required by:

  • cleaning, peeling and preparing fruits and vegetables, including carrots, onions, potatoes and other assigned food preparation duties;

  • assembling ingredients and assisting in preparing salads and desserts, and catering meals;

  • preparing food and beverage serving equipment for catering and take-out service;

  • determining requirements, evaluating present stocks and requisitioning required supplies by recording items on requisition board;

  • receiving supplies when required, ensuring proper quantity and quality of products;

  • storing food and beverage supplies in designated areas.

Knowledge and abilities:

  • Basic understanding of standard practices, methods and procedures of large volume food preparation and service, including knife skills and the use of kitchen equipment;

  • A willingness to learn, take criticism, verbal and written instruction;

  • Ability to keep an organized and clean work space and maintaining personal hygiene;

  • Knowledge of dishwashing equipment and methods;

  • Ability to maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers and customers;

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including lifting, bending, reaching, prolonged standing and walking.

Job Requirements


Education, training and experience:

  • Minimum 1 year related experience in a hotel, restaurant, or private club facility.
  • Completion of the Provincial "Food Safe" sanitation program for food handlers.
$16.62 per hour
