The Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery, owned and operated by Macaloney Brewers & Distillers Ltd, is a rapidly growing 550 HL production brewery, single malt whisky distillery (5500L & 3600L Forsyth’s stills), and tourist destination, located just minutes from downtown Victoria. Over 300 investors have come together to fund this local venture now producing premium quality malt whiskies and excellent craft beers. Our Twa Dogs craft beer range is presently distributed across BC and Alberta, our malt whiskies will be exported to over 30 countries, and between 50,000 – 100,000 tourists are ultimately expected to visit our brewery-distillery every year. Job Description: Head Brewer / Assistant Distiller :

The Head Brewer / Assistant Distiller is motivated self-starter who enjoys a hands-on role in a busy and rapidly changing production environment. The successful candidate will be someone with a demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive and enjoyable workplace culture. The Head Brewer / Assistant distiller will have a broad brewing, packaging and distilling background, with a strong emphasis on European/Scottish brewing styles and equipment will understand the principles of quality beer production and who strives for continuous quality improvement. A committed career brewer who has benefitted from formal training in brewing and distilling, the Head Brewer will find great reward in passing that knowledge to new generation of brewers.

The Position:

The Head Brewer will be located at the Victoria Caledonian Brewery and Distillery on Enterprise Crescent in Victoria but may be required at times to represent the business at tastings or other events. A flexible work schedule, including morning and evening shifts is required to meet the needs of the business. The Head Brewer will report to the Brewmaster and Production Manager and will responsible for the supervision of a growing number of reports as the business grows. He/she will also be responsible for managing our toll manufacturing commitments for craft beers. Although the role is primarily brewing, distilling and packaging, the Head Brewer will need to be sufficiently flexible to ensure that the collaborative efforts of the entire team result in a successful business.

Job Requirements

Qualifications: 

Responsibilities:

  • All day to day brewery and distillery tasks that cover the production and packaging of beer and whisky
  • Ensure quality products are manufactured, QC tested, filled, packaged and shipped on time, in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensuring that all production meets quality standards and that standard operating procedures are being followed by junior production staff.
  • Customer coordination and liaison with contract manufacturing customers for all aspects of their craft beer and spirit production needs.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for all on-site staff.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies, systems and processes, including Worksafe, WHMIS, wastewater and by-product disposal.
  • Contribute strongly to continuous improvement of quality systems, efficiency and safety
  • Assist with new product development.
  • Work with the CRD and other governmental agencies to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Drive plant productivity and cost improvement toward lower cost products through waste reduction, production efficiency, and operations improvements.
  • Be cross-trained as a back-up distiller. Be prepared to assume this responsibility if required.
  • Assist the Brewmaster in the organizing of production schedules, workloads and shift scheduling based upon rapidly growing production plan requirements, events and tours.
  • Contribute to materials planning and procurement to ensure scheduled production can take place, that orders are met and stock levels maintained.
  • Supervise, train and develop junior brewery staff.
  • Other responsibilities as required by the business.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ production and management experience in quality brewing, including the transfer from new product development, to ramp up and scale-up of new processes and products, and filing, packaging and storage in a licensed hygienic process manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated application of CPI for yield, quality and productivity improvements, variance reduction, change control, and in monitoring and control of production processes.
  • Demonstrated experience distilling single-malt (Scotch-style) whisky is strongly recommended.
  • Experience with large scale (eurpoean/Scottish sytle) production breweries, is strongly recommended.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in providing leadership and mentoring to a compact cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent time and priority management skills, ability to handle multiple simultaneous programs.
  • Strong communication, written, oral and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail when required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in brewing, distilling or similar, is an advantage.
  • Having a boiler ticket is strongly recommended
