The Manager, Ocean Wise Sustainable Seafood oversees all aspects of the Sustainable Seafood program using planning, monitoring and controlling processes. The Manager will work with their team along with other internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver on the Ocean Wise strategy, and is responsible for coordination and implementation of the program. To this end, the Manager will perform a variety of tasks including setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring and reporting on the progress of the program.


Planning & Development

Performing strategic planning, prioritizes and allocates available program resources;
Reviewing and evaluating program and service delivery, making recommendations for and executing changes in operations to ensure maximum effective service provision;
Directs the development of new program function elements, including researching, compiling and analyzing supporting data.

Public & Stakeholder Engagement

Liaising with key partners and stakeholders and maintains positive mutually beneficial relationships;
Liaising with other agencies, including Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch staff, Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, Global Sustainable Ratings Alliance, Global Ghost Gear Initiative, BC Monitoring and Compliance Panel, and various Canadian Fisheries and Aquaculture agencies working in similar fields as necessary, and finds collaborative opportunities where they exist;
Speaking on behalf of the program to partners, industry, media, NGO community and general public.

Operations & Monitoring

Developing and directing the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards where applicable for the program;
Monitoring and directing or performing day-to-day operations of the program to ensure that policies and procedures are being followed, that goals and objectives are met, and that services and projects are being accomplished efficiently and effectively; taking corrective action as necessary;
Overseeing departmental budget and provides regular status updates to superior, noting any variances. Overseeing financial well-being of the program by analyzing cost effectiveness and exercising cost controls;
Where possible, identifying and implementing opportunities to increase revenue-generating activities including grants and sponsorships without compromising the integrity of the program and its core components;
Performing complex administrative duties requiring oversight, attention to detail and analysis; performing strategic planning and financial analysis, including assisting in preparation of specialized program and project budgets to include staffing and operational needs;
Developing systems and maintaining records that provide for the proper evaluation, control and documentation of assigned activities; prepares a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures and other materials.

Provides management, coaching and mentoring to Direct Reports and contributes to and fosters the development of the team by:

Creating an environment conducive to individual development, productivity, and achievement while ensuring open lines of communication;
Ensuring that employees are well organized, sufficiently trained/cross-trained to perform their responsibilities, developed to their potential and deployed in a manner that permits a cost-effective operation;
Planning and facilitating individual touch bases (ITBs), group touch bases (GTBs), and skill-building sessions where appropriate;
Providing direction, guidance and support to team members and motivating staff to achieve a high level of performance and productivity;
Establishing performance objectives/goals, reviewing progress throughout the year,  and completing formal performance reviews for direct reports as required;
Recognizing and rewarding success, and managing poor performance;
Developing and obtaining agreement on development plans for all direct reports, recommending training courses and seminars where appropriate;
Recruiting, hiring and promoting team members in accordance with standard Ocean Wise policies;
Provides direction and key support to Ocean Wise Executive Chef;
Monitoring and controlling expenditures to ensure that Ocean Wise standards are met while continuing to maintain monthly budget;
Administration of payroll, travel requests, expense reports, purchasing requests, department inventory management and various contract creation and oversight.

Consistently improves the organization and its processes by:

Promptly aiding in Emergency protocol;
Maintaining organizational safety standards;
Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;
Actively demonstrating the Ocean Wise values and expectations for conduct;
Performing additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.


Job Requirements



Education and Experience

Degree in business, communications, and/or biology;
Five to seven years experience in a similar field, with three to five years in a management capacity.

Technical Competencies

Excellent leadership and management skills and abilities; experience overseeing staff teams separated by distance an asset;
Excellent project management and time management skills, with the ability to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day responsibilities;
A high level of understanding of sustainable fisheries and basic science processes;
Dynamic public speaking skills; media training an asset;
Excellent writing and general communication skills;
A high level of web literacy;
Public relations and/or event planning experience would be an asset;
Strong customer service skills;
Active demonstration of the organization’s values, code of conduct, and mission.

Working Conditions

Travel required within North America on a regular basis;
Flexible work schedule including evening and weekend work;
Open concept office environment.
