The Butchart Gardens is looking for an individual to fill the following full-time position:
DEPARTMENT: Arts and Entertainment
The Photographer is responsible for composing and taking photographs for all images used by The Butchart Gardens for internal and external publication. The Photographer regularly takes photographs of The Gardens, creating images showcasing the Gardens in peak condition for all seasons. Duties involve photographing public, private, and staff events, as well as for facility and maintenance projects, for PR projects, food services menus and advertising, as well as for on-line catalogues, staff recruitment and training, and for social media purposes. The photographer is also responsible for maintaining the image bank, photography archive, and assisting the archivist with the creation and installation of historical displays. Considerable post-production editing is required, so Photoshop or other post-production editing software skills are essential. Evening and weekend work will be required, with the possibility of occasional overtime. Good physical fitness is required as the job duties involve considerable walking, carrying of equipment, and prolonged periods of standing.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Apply photographic composition and technical skills to photograph The Gardens in peak conditions in all seasons for Marketing, PR, and social media purposes.
Maintain the highest quality photographic material to inspire visitation.
Determine appropriate areas, subjects, and compositions for photographs.
Photograph public, private, and staff events, including concerts and fireworks shows.
Document facility and site upgrades through photographs for various departments
Assist with creating and maintaining the Gardens historical archive and photography archive.
Provide photographic services at various hours, such as evenings and weekends as necessary.
Provide photographic services in all seasons, in all weather conditions, as required.
Maintain photographic equipment in good working order.
Use Photoshop to edit and retouch all images and present finished photographs of a high standard.
Process and upload images to Barberstock or other digital asset management systems.
Provide photographic consultation to other departments and assist on projects such as the gift store calendar, food service events, plant documentation & identification, staff photos, and facility & project documentation.
Provide videography services for PR and other departments as required.
Create and maintain an image bank for use by PR and for journalist requests.
Assist the archivist with the creation and installation of annual displays.
Catalogue and maintain the inventory of photographs.
Assist in other departments as requested or required.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge of visual and artistic presentation in regards to subject matter, framing, and composition.
Expertise in working with photographic equipment and demonstrated photographic skills.
Proficient at using SLR digital cameras, lenses, and filters.
Experience editing photographs with Photoshop and/or other post-production software.
Familiarity with Microsoft office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Excellent positive attitude and outlook.
Genuine desire and ability to be a team player, to show initiative, and to be able to compromise.
Excellent positive attitude, along with good written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
A demonstrated ability to work independently.
Show attention to detail and accuracy.
Good physical condition for walking, carrying of equipment, and for prolonged periods of standing.
Comfortable enough with heights to occasionally take photographs from roofs or bucket trucks.
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to apply creative judgement.
Strong problem solving abilities.
Flexibility in scheduling of hours. Evening and weekend work is required depending on the season.
Valid BC Driver’s License.
This is a full-time year-round position with a 6 month probationary period starting in late October, 2019. Shifts will be scheduled to suit the requirements of the department and the operation of the seasonal presentations. There will be occasional evening and weekend work and/or overtime. Candidates must be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather. Remuneration will be commensurate with this level of responsibility and the qualifications of the successful candidate. The Butchart Gardens began in 1904 as the private garden surrounding the home of Mr. & Mrs. R. P. Butchart. The Gardens are still maintained by the family and today comprise several major gardens, covering 55 acres of a 130 acre estate. The Gardens are open every day of the year however the height of the tourism season usually spans March to October and then again in December for the Christmas.
