SWAP Working Holidays is a non-profit program that offers youth aged 18 – 35 a truly unique opportunity to explore the world through work and travel. We send Canadians abroad, and welcome thousands of international youth into Canada every year – our job at Work in Canada is to help them upon arrival and throughout the duration of their time in Canada, to explore and enjoy as much of this wide country as possible!
We’re looking for a creative, energetic, multi-talented individual, who thrives in a busy, bustling environment and loves to help others. This is a fun, incredible job where you get the satisfaction of helping people adjust to life in Canada all while having a great time (where else can you run a pub night and organize hockey games with people from all over the world as part of your role?!)
As the Vancouver Work in Canada Assistant Coordinator, your job is to welcome newcomers on Working Holiday visas and to assist them in their first steps of settling in Canada. You are a naturally helpful, kind, empathetic, and patient individual who is understanding and enjoys interacting with new cultures, languages, and traditions, and takes enjoyment in sharing Canadian culture, traditions, history, and quirks with these participants. Ideally, you have travelled Canada / North America extensively and can suggest some awesome spots to check out – especially in Van city!
Previous event coordination experience – and an outgoing attitude – is also a plus for this position, as we host 2 social events per month for participants, encouraging newcomers to meet other Swappers and enjoy true Canadiana outings. Some past events that we have hosted are bowling nights, football games, comedy nights, art gallery viewings, and outdoor activities.
The hosting centre that you will work out of is a drop-in centre in a LGBTQ+ friendly, accessible setting. Some days are quieter for the completion of administration duties and others will be busy, assisting participants with resolving issues and finalizing plans. In addition to administrative tasks and providing one-on-one support to current participants as required, you will also run weekly group orientations. Our busiest time of year (July–November) sees a high level of arrivals and applicants must be able to work within a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
We are seeking someone who is very detail-oriented, as providing in-depth resume review and assistance is a huge part of this job. Experience working in data entry, admin, editing/proofing would be of a huge asset.
This position requires a high level of multitasking, problem-solving, and handling of sensitive and confidential information. You must be flexible and able to prioritize projects and clients as each day is different at SWAP! Candidates who apply should possess excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt to speaking with a variety of individuals such as participants, prospective employers, government personnel, and agency partners. SWAP prides itself on its caring, encouraging, and supportive community found coast to coast.
Daily duties would include:
Please submit your resume and a detailed, creative cover letter which indicates why you would be an excellent fit for this position, and why you should be an ambassador for Canada!Tell us your favourite place in Canada to visit, and your most memorable travel experience (Canada or elsewhere).
In your cover letter, please outline 3 of your must-see, budget-friendly sights in Vancouver or British Columbia that you would recommend to a person arriving here for the first time.
