BC Employer Training Grant (formerly Canada-BC Job Grant) (ETG) provides up to $8 million in funding for employers to offset costs to support skills training for their current and new employees in the fiscal year 2018/2019. Intake 2 has already reached maximum subscription targets for all three streams of funding. Intake 3 will begin accepting applications on October 1, 2018, for training date commencing January 1 – March 31, 2019.
What do tourism employers need to know about BC Employer Training Grant?
Applications to the ETG must be submitted through one of the following three eligible training streams. The streams differ by the type of skills training they support:
- Foundational Training Stream – This stream supports unemployed, underemployed and low-skilled British Columbians to obtain the accredited, transferrable and certified skills. Industry or sector certification, apprenticeship, trades, and accredited skills training fall under this category. The maximum government contribution amount is $10,000 per participant per year, 100% employer reimbursement. Industry certifications such as SIR, SES, FOODSAFE and SuperHost are all eligible for this funding.
- Technical Skills Training Stream – This stream will assist employers experiencing workforce transition due to increased automation and technological advancements, by providing support to train current or new employees. This stream supports technical skills required to use software, a program, or machinery. The maximum government contribution amount is $10,000 per participant per year, 80% employer reimbursement.
- Workforce Training Stream -This stream supports any training that isn’t foundational or technical, such as leadership, management, and soft skills training. The maximum government contribution amount is $5,000 per participant per year, 60% employer reimbursement.

What is the BC Employer Training Grant?

Who can apply?

What type of training is covered?
Eligible training must meet the needs of the business and lead to a guaranteed job in BC. The types of training that are eligible include essential skills, apprenticeship (first level or final level), technical, business, and more. Eligible training can take place in a classroom, online or at your workplace with a third-party trainer.
How much is available?
The maximum an employer can receive per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) is $10,000 per participant, with a maximum of $300,000 in total government funding per employer. Up to $8 million in funding for employers available for the fiscal year 2018/2019. Grants will be issued to qualifying applications on a first come, first served basis, until the fund is exhausted.
