This is a 3-year independent contractor opportunity based in-market in Eastern Canada, preferably Toronto or Ottawa.
Reporting to the Director of Sales, Meetings & Conventions, Corporate, the Manager, Meeting & Convention Sales, Canada, role is responsible for attracting Meetings & Conventions (M&C) business to Metro Vancouver. Primary attention will be on the Canadian corporate market. The position will also focus on Canadian association, incentive and other business market segments as determined by client opportunities and priorities. The position may also work in other markets as needed. To generate and close business, the work may include support for the strategic activation of Destination Vancouver’s local ambassador Meeting and Innovation Network of Distinction (MIND) Partnership.
The focus of this role is to generate high revenue, qualified leads and convert them to definite business for the benefit of Destination Vancouver member organizations and for the overall positive economic impact for the Metro Vancouver area and surrounding region. The Manager is responsible for the planning and implementation of sales strategies related to the Canadian market within the direction of the annual Destination Vancouver business plan. This is achieved by actioning specific market driven sales strategies and activities, including the delivery of the highest possible standards of sales and service. Essential to success is effective communication with colleagues, clients, Destination Vancouver members and partners.
This is a leadership role on behalf of Destination Vancouver, as well as the entire Vancouver tourism and hospitality community and industry active in the Canadian M&C markets.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Experience in a similar sales leadership role.
Meeting and convention sales related knowledge of Metro Vancouver and British Columbia.
A thorough knowledge of the Canadian corporate meeting, incentive, and convention market, specifically Canada. Base level understanding of other markets.
Experience in the Canadian corporate meetings and incentive market is a strong asset.
Proven track record of attaining measurable results in sales and marketing.
Proven leadership, interpersonal and delegating skills, as well as high personal motivation, positive attitude, and the ability to motivate others.
Excellent organization, coordinating, planning and time management skills, detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking abilities.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, strong presentations skills (in-person and digital/virtual).
A high level of professionalism, maturity, diplomacy and judgment regarding decision-making and fostering positive interpersonal relationships.
Ability to work well independently and collaboratively; committed to individual, team, corporate and industry service excellence.
A curious and positive attitude, highly motivated and proven ability to take initiative.
Strong innovative and creative outlook for sales and business development.
Passionate about Vancouver as a place to live, work, play, experience and explore.
Strong technology skills including social media for business. Good working knowledge of database management, Microsoft Office applications, CRM technology, and a strong willingness to learn and adapt to new software applications and hardware.
A second language (French and/or Spanish) is an asset but not required.
Post-secondary education in business, tourism or related disciplines and/or related experience.

Flexibility of schedule is required for activities that occur outside of standard business operating hours. Site inspections, FAMs and hosting industry events may take place on weekends and evenings. Work is also affected by travel and time zones. Working hours will vary due to the nature of the tourism industry.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?
This is a three-year contractor role based in eastern Canada, preferably Toronto or Ottawa.
Expected salary range: $90,000 – $95,000

Responsibilities & Qualifications
STRATEGIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Initiate, plan, lead and execute Vancouver’s in-market sales activities; sales trips and events, sales missions, conference and tradeshow presence, industry organization representation.
Initiate, plan, lead and execute Vancouver’s in-destination sales activities; qualified individual client site inspections, targeted group familiarization visits and hosting of high priority, client rich industry organization events.
Generate qualified Canadian M&C leads and converting them to definite business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning and Strategy Development:
Assist the Vice President, Meetings, Conventions & Events, the Director of Sales and the M&C team in developing and preparing annual business plan strategy, content and budget.
Assist with the ongoing identification and development of Destination Vancouver’s M&C sales and marketing goals and objectives and the delivery of meeting and convention strategies and tactics.
Prepare and deliver Vancouver destination bid presentations to decision making and influencing clients. Prepare and deliver Destination Vancouver presentations for members and industry partners.
Maintain active membership in high priority industry associations/organizations, including volunteer leadership roles where appropriate and beneficial to achieving goals.
Sales and Service Delivery:
Efficiently use Destination Vancouver’s Customer Relations Management (CRM) – Simpleview, for account generation and management, lead development and trace follow up.
Manage lead system policies and procedures in referring business to Destination Vancouver members and partners in a fair and equitable manner.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with members and partners active in-market and related industry partners.
Organize Destination Vancouver member and partner participation in sales missions, trade shows and conferences as well as business development and special promotion activities and events.
Keep informed regarding member personnel changes, product development and renovations, changes in management, regular hotel and facility site inspections, visits with sales personnel and property tours, regular contact/meetings with key members and industry partners active in the market.
Keep informed on relevant City of Vancouver developments, policies, practices, trends and events.
Keep informed on worldwide competition regarding sales and marketing for Canadian business; competitive DMO activities and budgets, new and expanded convention facilities.
Provide information and guidance to members and partners requesting Canada sales and marketing activity information, market intelligence and convention data/statistics.
Support attendance building activities for definite business.
Data and Reporting:
Proficient use and understanding of relevant meeting and convention reports, data and statistics; for example, Simpleview CRM, FuturePace, department measures, KPIs.
Understanding and relevant use of external sources; for example, STR, Watkins Evidenz, Destination International, Destination Canada Business Events.
Budget Management:
Manage market related meetings & convention budget.
