Job Description

The Operations Manager at Great Bear Lodge is responsible for maintaining the facilities, vehicles, and boats (outboard motors) for optimum performance and efficiency, and for co-leading the guide and lodge team throughout the season to exceptional guest experiences. The health and safety of our guests depends on our Operations Manager being proactive and meticulous in their role. Under the supervision of the General Manager, and in collaboration with the Lodge Manager, the Operations Manager participates in pre-season and ongoing training and team building to foster cohesion, a strong sense of personal work ethics, clarity of role and expectations, and opportunities for self-direction and autonomy. This job is physically demanding, so we need someone who can be on their feet most of their shift, moving and working around small spaces, stairways, people, and floating buildings, often within tight timelines.
Your typical week involves:
 Scheduled and preventative maintenance of motorized equipment, including boat engines, diesel generator, micro hydro generator, and large and small appliances
 Leading and supporting guide team with interpretation, trip planning, safety, gear maintenance, and guest experiences
 Leading and supporting lodge team, including all kitchen operations
 Developing, implementing, and evaluating policies and procedures
 Preparing budgets and monitoring revenues and expenses
 Resolving guest complaints.
 This role is onsite for a full season (May through October), 18 days on, 6 days off.

Great Bear Lodge needs and supports our team members to show up every day with energy and enthusiasm for their work, their team, and the guests at Great Bear Lodge. All team members help one another throughout our days and our shifts as workloads, guest needs, and projects ebb and flow, so there will be times when you are asked to assist with other tasks onsite.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Experience and qualifications needed/wanted:
1. Previous experience in tourism, wilderness lodge, boutique hotel or bed and breakfast in a managerial/leadership role (5 + years)
2. Wilderness First Responder certification
3. Strength and agility (for daily climb 60 metres up 55 degree rocky slope along a fixed line carrying 20kg) for micro hydro generator maintenance.
4. Commercial cooking/kitchen – cooking, prepping (5 + years)
5. Wildlife (marine and terrestrial) guiding & interpretation experience (5 + years)
6. Maintenance experience with diesel and gasoline engines, outboard motors, small and large appliance repair.
7. Supervision of small (2 – 10) staff teams (5 + years)
8. Lived and worked in a remote setting with other team members
9. Marine navigation experience plus accreditation (10 + years)
10. Knowledgeable and able to navigate coastal waters and terrestrial landscapes.
11. Effective communication and teamwork.
12. Fluent in Spanish, French, and/or German
13. Post-secondary certificate in tourism, hospitality, recreation, and/or education. In lieu of certificate, 10+ years of leadership/management plus technical skills may be considered.

Salary/Wage

Other Perks/Benefits

• We operate May through late-October • All team members typically work onsite for 18 days, then fly out for 6 days off. • We provide shared accommodations and food while onsite. • Transportation to and from the Lodge is via floatplane from Port Hardy (you are responsible for getting to and from Port Hardy on schedule). • You will be living and working on a small, floating facility, which feels like living and working on a large boat. Must be able to live and work in close quarters with staff of all ages. • Internet is limited and shared – streaming and consumptive online activity is not feasible here.
