Title: Safety Coordinator
Department: Mountain Operations
Reports to: Operations Manager

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for the overall health and safety of staff and guests. The SC is responsible for the management of the Occupational Health and Safety Program including Prevention and Claims. Prevention includes Risk Assessments, Policies, Procedures and Training. Claims include reporting, investigating, and facilitating return to work options for injured staff members. The SC is also responsible for managing all Code 5 claims, investigations, and communication. The SC provides these services to both Mt Seymour Resorts and Sea to Sky Parks Services.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To uphold Mt Seymour’s mandate to “excite and engage everyone in mountain recreation by providing fun, safe and enriching experiences.”
• To uphold and promote Mt Seymour’s Core Values: Safety, Fun, Integrity, Accessibility and Environmental Stewardship.
• Compliance with all Mt Seymour policies and procedures.
• Sign and uphold Mt Seymour’s Confidentiality Agreement.
• Correspond/liaise with industry and government agencies as required including:

o BC Parks
o WorkSafeBC
o RCMP
o Canada West Ski Area Association
o Go2HR
o Employer Advisors Office
o Insurance Company
o Company Lawyers

• Report to senior management and rectify unsafe acts, conditions, or procedures.
• Manage the Occupational Health and Safety Program including:

o Bi-annual review and revision
o Execution and enforcement
Collaborate with Department Managers in developing the following documents to support health and safety being a priority in all departments and parks within our organization:

o Risk Assessments
o Policies
o Procedures
o Training Agendas
o Training Materials
o Training Logs

• Develop and deliver Occupational Health and Safety Training including prevention and claims topics to all levels of employees in the fall and throughout the years as new hires come on board.
• Manage worker injury claims and near misses including:

o Reporting to WorkSafeBC when required
o Investigations
o Facilitating the Return-to-Work Program
o Assigning and following up on Corrective Actions

• Manage and oversee the Code 5 (incidents/injuries involving company equipment and facilities) documentation including:
o Investigations
o Communication with MSR Claims and Guest Interaction
o Communication with MSR’s Insurance Company to report Code 5’s
• Working with Mt Seymour’s insurance company adjusters and / or legal representatives to assemble and deliver all the investigation materials and work with them in settling claims, in some cases liaising with the guest/injured party directly to find a resolution.
• Perform Certificate of Recognition (COR) internal maintenance audits for years 2 & 3 of the COR Audit Cycle
• Maintain Internal COR Auditor status by participating and declaring at least 7 hours of training as set out in by go2HR.
• Annually provide staff injury data to each Department Head to assist with further injury prevention and to identify areas of high risk.
• Monitor and promote Mt Seymour policies and procedures within all departments throughout daily operations.
• Work on the following throughout the summer months:

o OHS Program Updates
o Injury Statistics (worker & guest)
o Document Review
o Providing Worker First Aid
o Wildfire Prevention
o Other topics as needed.

• Assist the Operations Department Management Team throughout daily winter operations by providing support in the following operational areas as needed:

o Snow Removal
o Road & Parking Lot Management
o Shuttle Bus Issues
o Lift Operations Issues
o Ski Patrol Support
o Risk Management Observations
o Emergency Response
o Other issues as needed.

• Maintain excellent inter-departmental relations.
• Other related duties as required for the success of the mountain operation.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal.
• Minimum grade 12 education
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office including:

o Outlook
o Word
o Excel
o Teams
o Power Point
• Previous supervisory experience in the tourism or recreation industry.
• Ideally previous experience in a ski resort setting.
• Intermediate skier or Snowboarder.
• Occupational First Aid level 3; or willing to obtain.
• COR Internal Auditor Certification Course (go2HR); or willing to obtain.
• Foundations of Workplace Safety Course (go2HR); or willing to obtain.
• Occupational Health and Safety Program Fundamentals (go2HR); or willing to obtain.
• BSAFE Training Course (go2HR); or willing to obtain.
• Own vehicle required.
• Must be able to physically:
o Sustain sitting at a desk for 8 working hours,
o Sustain computer work for 8 working hours,
o Be able to spend up to 4 hours per day walking around all areas of the resort including ski runs and other resort areas during adverse weather, (twice per week)
o Sustain a professional working manner during emergency situations.
o Work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful work environment,
o Assist during emergency situations as needed.
o Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
• ASSETS:
o WorkSafeBC Claims management experience.

• Ability to be a supportive team member beyond the Operations department.

Salary/Wage

$58,000-$75,000

Other Perks/Benefits

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT • Full-time, permanent position. • $58,000-$75,000 (Salary based on experience and qualifications). • Vacation pay accrual of 6% per bi-weekly pay period to provide 3 weeks annual vacation. • 50% of employee benefit costs including medical, dental, extended health, life insurance, and long-term disability coverage after 3 months of continuous full-time employment. • Family Seasons Passes. • RRSP plan membership will commence after 1 year of continuous full-time employment and will be matched by the company up to 2%. • Up to 80 hours of banked time can be taken throughout the summer months. • The first 3 months of employment will constitute a probationary period. During this time, your performance will be monitored, assessed, and evaluated to ensure suitability for this role.
