What is the Psychological Health & Safety Framework?
The Framework supports employers in managing Psychological Health & Safety in a proactive, practical way that aligns with existing national and international workplace safety standards. Built on three core principles and five key categories of psychosocial hazards that can contribute to stress, burnout, or mental injury if left unaddressed, it empowers employers to foster respectful, resilient, and mentally healthy work environments.
Recognizing and reducing these risks is essential to creating psychologically safe workplaces — especially in people-centered sectors like Tourism & Hospitality, where emotional labour, high guest expectations, long hours, and a fast pace can significantly increase stress for workers.
Why the Framework Exists?
WorkSafeBC developed this Framework to help businesses support the psychological health of their workers. It recognizes that mental well-being is just as important as physical safety, and that both are essential for a safe, productive, and sustainable workplace. It also aligns with existing Occupational Health & Safety regulations related to bullying, harassment, and workplace violence.
While specific psychological health and safety regulations have not yet been introduced in BC, new requirements are expected. By adopting the Framework now, you position your business ahead of the curve — showing that you value both your team’s well-being and your role as a responsible employer.
