What is a Health & Safety Policy?
A Health & Safety Policy is your company’s commitment to creating a safe and healthy work environment, both physically and psychologically. It is your formal promise to protect workers, contractors, and anyone else affected by your operations from any workplace hazards, and lays the foundation for your overall Health and Safety Program.
What Should it Include?
Your Health & Safety Policy can be short and simple. In most cases, one page is enough. What matters is that it’s clear, meaningful and shared with your team. Your policy should include:
- A definition of what a physically and psychologically safe workplace looks like
- A clear statement of your commitment to achieving health and safety goals
- An outline of how you’re prioritizing workplace health and safety on a daily basis
- Defined responsibilities for the employer, managers, supervisors, and workers
- A pledge to meet all applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices
Keep It Current and Visible
To stay effective, your policy should be reviewed and signed each year by the business owner or most senior leader in your organization. Make sure it’s:
- Shared with every worker, including contractors and new hires
- Clearly posted in a visible area of your workplace
You’re Off to a Great Start
Creating a Health & Safety Policy is an important first step in protecting your people and building a strong workplace culture. By putting it in writing and making it visible, you’re showing strong, healthy leadership and setting the tone for everything that follows in your health and safety journey.
