Job Description

Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility located above Whistler Village on the side of Blackcomb Mountain. True to its mission to grow sport, the venue is not only used for training and competition by athletes from beginner to world class level, but it is also the only place in Canada where public can try bobsleigh and skeleton to slide like an Olympian with no experience required.

Refrigeration and Building/Facility Operations Apprentice assists experienced operators / technicians installing, maintaining, and repairing refrigeration and facilities systems at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Regular Hourly Full Time role gains experience working with tools and following safety protocols while gaining hands-on experience through required educational courses and on-the-job training. The goal of the apprentice is to develop the skills needed to become a certified refrigeration operator and trained in building/facility operations. Role requires flexibility to work varied shifts including weekends, evenings and overnight.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Timeline for 2-year (27-month) Refrigeration and Building/Facility Operations Apprenticeship

• January to April 2026
o Scheduled and paid for 8 hour per week to study for refrigeration certification, with the expectation exam with passing mark be completed by April 31st, 2026
o During the time period set out above, the Apprentice will continue to work and be paid in their current role(s) as a current colleague
• On April 1st, 2026, the Apprentice will transition to this set out role / position description with a status of Regular Hourly Full Time with specified reporting structure and pay commencement
• April to June 2026
o Apprentice must successfully write required Refrigeration Operator exam and submit supporting transcript indicating passing mark
 If Apprentice is unsuccessful and does not receive a passing mark, then may rewrite the exam once prior to September 2026 and submit supporting transcript indicating passing mark
• April to September 2026
o Apprentice will carry out track and building/facility maintenance duties as detailed below
• October to March 2026-2027
o Apprentice will work as Refrigeration Operator as required to obtain the required on-the-job experience
o Other operational duties, as required, could augment role during this time if scheduling can accommodate
• April to September 2027
o Apprentice will carry out track and building/facility maintenance duties as detailed below
• October to March 2027-28
o Apprentice will work as Refrigeration Operator as required to obtain the required on-the-job experience
o Track Worker duties/role could augment during this time if scheduling can accommodate
• During the proceeding 24-month period, paid time will be approved and scheduled to study and attend assigned education courses deemed beneficial to the role
• April 2028
o If successful in fulfilling all the Refrigeration Operator job requirements, Apprentice may be offered a Regular Full Time role Refrigeration and Building/Facility Operations
• Apprenticeship process requires hands-on experience supplemented by in-school training through required and specified educational courses all under supervision
• All educational courses must be completed as assigned
o Specific courses will be identified in a supplemental document at hire including payment reimbursement information by Whistler Sport Legacies

Refrigeration and Building/Facility Operations Apprentice In-training shadowing / training / duties:

• Ensure operations are performed safely and efficiently according to industry standards
• Routine maintenance work such as painting, HVAC maintenance, basic plumbing, mechanical systems inspection, monitoring of building systems, tracking and reporting of preventative tasks for all WSC buildings/facilities
• Building/Facility duties also include cleaning and sanitizing all facility areas, including floors, stairwells, washrooms, windows (inside and out), furniture, carpets, boards, kitchens / appliances, waste and recycling sorting and removal
• Familiarization of operations communication binder, work orders, log book, shift turn over reports, control systems, or other communication protocols
• Emergency response for situations including safety and/or operational concerns to ensure minimal work interruption and safe operations
• Handling tools and materials
• Assisting with equipment diagnostics, cleaning components, and learning to troubleshoot issues
• Duties will expand by working in the following roles and specific Position Description(s) which will be shared under separate cover:
o Track Worker
o Track Maintenance Worker
o Equipment Maintenance Worker
• Adhere to all operational and safety procedures including wearing PPE when required
• Foster a strong culture of health and safety; work with Human Resources, and Safety to ensure that all WorkSafe BC and BC Safety Authority requirements are being met
• Positive representative of WSL, both internally and externally
• Carry out Whistler Sport Legacies’ customer service philosophy AIM: All Interactions Matter
• Assist team with other duties as assigned or required

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• Ammonia Safety Awareness Certificate required or enrolment in Ammonia Safety Awareness course required
• High School graduate certificate required
• Must be 19 years of age or older
• General knowledge of the Whistler Sliding Centre venue, and the sports of Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, as well as high performance training an asset
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license required
• Valid Class 4 BC driver’s license an asset

Skills
• Analytical and problem-solving skills required
• Safety conscious to ensure safety of guests, athletes, staff
• Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of MS Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Proven ability to take on additional responsibilities without guidance
• Ability to work well as part of a team as well as unsupervised
• Good written and verbal communication skills as well as good interpersonal skills
• Passion for exceptional customer service is essential

Physical Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in variable winter weather conditions
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
• Adequate ability to distinguish colours for monitoring alarms on computer screens
• Ability to wear and work while wearing a full-face respirator

Salary/Wage

$23.00 per hour to start with increments linked to study and certification(s)
