Hazard Identification & Risk Assessments

Overview

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) is the process of identifying potential hazards in the workplace, using a risk matrix to assess the level of risk they pose to workers, and putting controls in place to reduce or eliminate those risks. This process should be ongoing and updated whenever there are changes to work activities, equipment, or conditions.
To support employers in meeting these requirements, go2HR has developed industry-specific hazard identification and risk assessment documents that help employers systematically identify hazards, evaluate risks, and maintain a safer workplace

The resources in this section provide a starting point for building and maintaining your workplace Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA). The general HIRA template and guidance document are intended for use across all industries and are designed to support employers when completing, reviewing, and updating industry-specific HIRA tools.

These documents explain how to apply risk ratings consistently, select appropriate control measures, and tailor assessments to your specific workplace and job tasks. Employers should review the Guidance Document – Assessing Risk for HIRA Tools before completing any HIRA and refer back to it when using industry-specific HIRA tools. HIRAs should be reviewed with a Joint Health and Safety Committee or Worker Health and Safety Representative and updated as work conditions change.
